The Skill[edit]
Before your character may serve as a Naval Trooper (a member of a capital ship's security detail) with the Vast Empire Navy (in other words, before you may repel boarders or guard prisoners), and before you start the second tier of the Imperial Marine certification track, you must demonstrate that your character has the basic knowledge necessary to use coordinated tactics with friendly forces in a face-to-face combat situation (rather than in an aero-space combat situation). This knowledge (and its practical application) is known as the "Squad Tactics" Intermediate Ancillary Skill, in VEN role-playing parlance. You demonstrate this knowledge (and thereby earn the "Squad Tactics" Ancillary Skill for your character's Bio) by completing the following mission.
The Mission : "We think they may be splitting up... they may be on levels five and six, now, sir..."[edit]
Write a short story (750 words, minimum) in which your character must track down and eliminate intruders aboard an Imperial station or ship, working in concert with a supporting squad of Vast Imperial Marines. You may be seeking one or two infiltrators, or else fighting a larger enemy force as a part of a larger counter-boarding action. Either way, be sure to include a description of basic infantry tactics: FIND the enemy, FIX them in position with suppressing fire, FLANK them by attacking their sides or rear, and then FINISH them and regroup. Be sure to describe the weapons and equipment your character employs, and give some thought to differentiating your squadmates. When complete, post your short story to a new thread in the Navy ComNet (making sure to mark it as a Mission for the Squad Tactics Ancillary Skill), and wait for review. If a VENA staff member deems that you have satisfied all the mission parameters, you will have earned the Ancillary Skill "Squad Tactics" for your character, and that character may then use the associated knowledge in future story posts.
