Origins[edit]

Geki-encryption was an advanced encryption that was made popular by wealthy galactic conglomerates from 20BBY-10BBY. It was first synthesized in 27BBY by Ector Itimali, a private researcher; however, the source of the encryption style was quickly stolen and redistributed to the highest bidder. Concequently, the methods and techniques required to synthesize the encryption were kept very quiet, and the number of geki-practioners was kept very small. Though it would become widely used, the actual techniques involved in constructing, re-arranging and deactivating the coding would be known to relative few, and would remain the subject of speculation for another ten years. During it's height, it was said to be one of the final jumps in encryption technology, and was widely regarded as "unbreakable." Because the number of geki-encryption specialist was so few, wealthy conglomerates who needed the technology to keep the edge on their competition jacked the service price, and specialists were made extremly wealthy in a very short period of time.

Related Violence[edit]

Cite of inter-syndicate violence over suspected geki-encryption intelligence.

Around 17BBY, geki-encryption became of interest to several planetary defense agencies. After several years of proven protection, many were interested in the potential that geki-encryption had for planetary security and, as a result, it was eventually adopted by some 20 planets. Because of the widening scope of the encryption's use, and the fact that it was so impossible to breach, pirates, crime syndicates, bounty hunters were suddenly having to deal with the reality of the encryption. What followed was an increasing demand for geki-encryption specialists, at first through large buy-outs (like those that had been offered by the conglomerates) and then by force. Between 13BBY and 2ABY, specialists were hunted, captured and forced into service by a vareity of illegal organizations. The methods by which many were captured were considered atrocious by many: ransoms and then horrifying executions for non-compliance. In many cases, slums (where many would hide to avoid detection) were ransacked, and then thoroughly searched for even a single individual; executions were used in this arena to intimidate other inhabitants into giving up the geki-specialist.

After a geki-specialist was captured, they would often crack, reveal the secrets of the encryption and then be disposed of. The knowledge of that encryption, once known, was also fought over, often times, within the illegal organizations. It was not uncommon for these conflicts to lead to sudden, unsolicited violence, and in many cases the valued intelligence of geki-encryption was lost. Many, many life-forms were killed between 13BBY and 2ABY over geki-encryption.

Dissolution[edit]

Geki was eventually made less and less secret, though, as more crime groups, and corporate interest, made the information available to a wider audience. By 2ABY, much of Geki's significance eliminated by it's increased supply, and the corresponding increase in more advanced encryption technology.
