TIE Class Fighters

All TIEs share some key characteristics that define them so well that they are instantly recognizable. Most often, the cockpit is spherical and has a pylon at each side, supporting its razor-like wings. (The wings are razor like to cut through atmosphere and reduce the amount of surface that will be noticed by the enemy- the less there is to see, the harder it becomes to shoot at.) And probably the most important characteristic- the twin ion engines that give the class its name.

*Description: Standard space combat unit for the Imperial Navy

The TIE fighter was manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems and cost 60,000 Imperial Credits (the standard currency of the Empire) to build, which is cheap for a fighter. The design was based on the older, Advanced Jedi starfighter and the Sith Infiltrator.

While highly maneuverable, TIE fighters had minimal or no shielding and were easily destroyed. The TIE pilots themselves, had to trust their adept flying and combat skills to compensate for these weaknesses. In the VEN, all fighters have shields standard, but they are pretty weak and can be taken down in a single bolt if hit dead on. They do not carry missile tubes in standard configurations, but these were sometimes added as necessary as well as even heavier shields. The fighters have no landing gear and are launched from specialized racks, although they are structurally capable of sitting on their wings. Life-support systems were not included, so each pilot had a fully-sealed flight suit (of superior construction to that of his Rebel counterpart).

Contrary to popular belief, the ships did possess ejection seats, as evidenced in Episode V, but the nature of space warfare resulted in pilots preferring to ride their craft to a swift end rather than eject and risk slow death by oxygen starvation.

The fighters, along with their pilots, were viewed as expendable by high ranking Imperial officers; even the pilots consider themselves expendable. Like storm troopers, TIE pilots were addressed by a number, such as DS-61-2 (the first two letters indicate the posting, the next two or three digits indicate the squadron number, and the last number indicating the pilot's ranking in the squadron). In the VEN, that doctrine has been changed to look on such actions as rather converse to their needs- we now rely more on experienced, well protected pilots more than expendable, mass numbers. TIE fighters were weak individually, although a direct hit on a starfighter or medium transport could damage or destroy it, but again- TIE craft were intended for use in large numbers. For a limited time, Admiral Zaarin had a select few TIEs retrofitted with torpedo launchers and shields due to an emergency situation. This is not common practice because you might as well get a better craft that is intended to carry such equipment- most notably the Interceptor.

Also known as the TIE Fire-Control Fighter, it is a variant in the TIE fighter series. It carried only one laser cannon and instead carried several sensors. It was primarily designed to scan an enemy base and transmit the information back to the fleet. The ships would then attack the base and be able to evade the enemy's defenses. Because of its importance, the craft was designed to be very maneuverable.

TIE/gt

Short for TIE Ground-Targeting Starfighter, it is a predecessor to the TIE Bomber. It was designed to be dependent on the TIE/fc Fighter, which provided precise targeting information. The fighter's payload included 6 proton torpedoes, 18 air-deployed mines, or 20,000 plastic leaflets which were used for propaganda missions.

TIE Advanced (X1)

    *Class: Starfighter - TIE Series
    *Corporation: Sienar Fleet Systems
    *Hyperdrive: x1
    *Sublight: 133 MGLT
    *Weapon(s): 4xLaser cannon
    *2xGeneral purpose missile launcher
    *Length: 6.4 m
    *Hull (RU): 14
    *Shields (SBD): 40
    *Crew: 1
    *Passengers: -
    *Cargo: 75 kg
*Quick Description: Successful yet maintenance intensive advanced starfighter. Result of many prototype trials.

The TIE Advanced x1, developed by Admiral Zaarin, features the original spaceframe and reinforced durasteel-alloy hull, with an elongated rear deck and matching bent wings covered with radiator-panels. The vessel has an ionization reactor and paired twin-ion engines for a more powerful drive system than the standard TIE fighter. Acceleration was only slightly improved due to the added mass of the vessel; a good deal of the extra power is bled off to the shield generators. The TIE Advanced uses the hyperdrive when going to lightspeed and the Twin Ion Engines in sublight- thus really two systems.

While less maneuverable than standard TIE fighters, it can take a beating, most notably Darth Vader's personal prototype that survived blast from the Millennium Falcon. (That famous fighter was stowed aboard the Executor and vaporized when the ship collided with the second Death Star.)

The TIE Advanced x1 has twin heavy-blaster cannons in a fixed, front-mounted position. In addition to its shields, it has a modest hyperdrive but no life support system. The Empire decided not to order the TIE Advanced x1 in large quantities, citing their excessive cost. Privately, some Imperial Navy strategists admitted that the Navy was afraid to purchase a fighter with a hyperdrive, fearing that it would give bureaucrats an excuse to slash orders for new capital starships.

The Empire instead opted for the TIE Interceptor, which featured the TIE Advanced x1's drive system in a more compact ship. Although the TIE interceptor lacked a hyperdrive and shields, it was blindingly fast, incredibly maneuverable, and significantly cheaper than the TIE Advanced x1. By the Battle of Endor, the large increase in TIE interceptor production meant the end of production for the TIE Advanced x1. It is used on some rare, solo based squadron missions in tight tactical emergencies- they avoided for the most part.

TIE Avenger

Not to be confused with the TIE Advanced, the TIE Avenger is based off of the craft used by Darth Vader except a little smaller and less bomber-looking. Just about everything, except for size and shape, are exactly the same between the Avenger and Advanced.

The Avenger was initially developed by Sienar Fleet Systems (SFS) as an intended replacement for the rapidly aging TIE starfighter, but the Avenger's cost did not endear it to the Empire's massive bureaucracy. When a rival SFS design team unveiled the TIE interceptor earlier before the Avenger's hyperdrive was finished, the Navy was quick to take note of the Interceptor's similar performance and greatly decreased price tag and the TIE Avenger never saw widespread deployment. While the TIE Interceptor was more numerous than the Avenger, so too was the TIE Defender more capable and versatile. (The Avenger also saw even less service than the Defender because of the destruction of Avenger factories in the Omar system.) Consequently, the TIE Avenger became the middle child of Imperial starfighter development, never achieving the notoriety of either of its closest relatives.

Function : More than anything, the idea of the Avenger, X1 and Defender was to act something like the group Rogue Squadron. This X-Wing group was totally multipurpose, and part of the reason they were so capable was their hyperdrive units, allowing them to jump from system to system, battle to battle. This allowed for a lack of capitol ships, such as ISDs or even some smaller craft, so that a few squadrons could just be launched from a planet and jump to their destination. When their mission was complete, they would be able to jump back to their base. This would save money and allow for the capitol ships to be used where they would be most necessary.

This is the main fighter of the VEN- more often than not, you will be flying one of these, so it is imperative you understand their basic function and abilities so you can write about them in the same manner as everyone else. Read carefully and ask your training officer any questions you might have afterward about the fighter and its abilities; he/she will make sure to answer them to the best of their abilities and may even use it to better the VENA, so make sure you do ask.

This short-range fighter was first manufactured soon after the Battle of Yavin, and became abundant by the time of the Emperor's fall. Reports on the Interceptor's speed are numerous, but the VEN's ships are somewhat special. Since pilots became sparse and equipment as well due to the sudden surge in New Republic power, factions, like the VE, were forced to conserve but also upgrade. Thus, although the design did not change, the Interceptors were tweaked to the greatest level to present unparalleled performance. Thus, their energy outputs, maneuverability capabilities and overall shiny appearance are some of the greatest known. While there are show fighters nicer than these, none are kept up after going through battle, only the VEN does this.

One of the faster Imperial star fighters, the military release model has its acceleration rating at 125MGLT (Mega Lights) where as the 'bought' versions only go about 111MGLT, or at least VEN Interceptors. That makes it 5 MGLTs faster than the A-wing. Normally the A-wing is considered a far more superior craft, but since all of the fighters in the Imperial Navy have shields as a standard modification, and the Interceptor has been given four missiles in our case, it is at least considered an equal. Also, that speed means it's roughly twenty-five MGLTs faster than the T-65 X-wing, the main, multi-purpose ship of the New Republic and originally the Alliance. The B-wing isn't even close at 60MGLT.

The Interceptor has numerous hard points for laser cannons. The most basic model, which is used by the VEN, has four cannons, which can be quad-linked and set to variable integration stages, on the front tips of the wings. The sub-class of Interceptors, deployed at Endor, bore a pair of identical cannons in the usual place below the forward window, and two more pairs on the hub of each wing near the targeting sensors. This gives a blistering firepower with a total of ten laser cannons. Of course, it is possible that some of the extra weapons are ion cannons or other types of armament, but their visible structural details are identical to the conventional laser cannons.

There are some disadvantages to the extra armament though. The heavily armed Interceptors have marginally greater energy consumption, and therefore need to return to base for refueling slightly sooner than the basic model. And they are also more expensive to construct and more difficult to maintain.

Other variants included a hyperspace-capable version (possibly a separate class rather than a retrofit) employed by Admiral Trigit in the forces of Warlord Zsinj. When Grand Admiral Thrawn returned from the Unknown Regions to confront the New Republic, he ordered the development and installation of potent deflector shields on his forces' TIE Interceptors.

Function

When the TIE Interceptor is deployed, it isn't normally to go on 'a mission,' but instead to secure allied space and do routine patrols. In other organizations, that’s about all a TIE pilot will see unless he is lucky enough to get ambushed by pirates or enemy groups. A pretty bleak life by the looks of things... However, since the Vast Empire is a much smaller organization than it used to be and thus lacks the time to do mediocre task because of the increase in hazard and decrease in fighters and other supplies; every pilot is more than a simple zombie of the Empire. The pilots are trained to be the best of the best and there isn't much less they'll accept; in some cases, they'll cut losses if it is absolutely necessary, but it is an extremely detrimental affair if decided upon. Since the Vast Empire is only a branch off of the Empire, they have decided to be a little more feeling toward their people; they do allow people to keep their same fighters and achieve bonds to both instruments of battle as well as people. The original Empire swore against this, hoping to keep their people as mindless folk who would do the service of the Empire on a whim. The VEN strongly suggest getting to know the people of your squadron as well as other members of the Navy so chemistry will improve as well as tactical and physical abilities during combat. The idea is just that- if everyone knows each other, things will run much smoother... Now, all this 'friendliness' doesn't mean the VEN has thrown away its rich heritage of punishment. The VEN is notorious for its justice system; a court marshal is more than a court date here...

Now, since the pilots aren't so easily disposed of, they are actually important. On occasion, there will be months were a fighter of the VEN will see nothing but allied space and escorts, but then there are long seasons of battle where it seems the crews will never get a break.

The main function is to protect by means of attack, defense or simply warding off enemies from the sheer sight of them as they escort. The TIE Interceptor does just what its name implies- it sees an enemy and meets them half-way so that they might be able to destroy them.

TIE Interceptors normally travel in groups of three or four, or a 'flight', and are assigned a wing mate. These pairs of fighters are normally two pilots with extremely good 'chemistry' and abilities that compliment one other's strengths and cover up each other’s weaknesses. The two-man 'element' is the basic component of any TIE Interceptor squadron. By no means will you ever see a TIE Interceptor of the VEN flying solo- this is extremely foolish and is even punishable by VEN law if it is done to abandon their wing mate. This would leave both him and his wing mate vulnerable to attack- no one has their back... To the VEN- it is the equivalent of murder as well as suicide for yourself. "Never abandon the element..."

Abilities

The TIE Interceptor is a very, very interesting craft at times. It is specifically designed to be hard to hit, thus they seem to come in and out of battles with relative ease compared to X-wings, Y-wings, B-wings or even A-wings at times. This slim profile allows it to literally cut through the air and find its position. That has it's advantages and disadvantages though. While in space, this maneuvering is the greatest and makes the TIE Interceptor especially lethal. However, upon entering atmosphere, the rules change. A TIE Fighter pilot is used to riding someone's tail because they can avoid debris and fire far easier than other craft because of their profile. However, sticking close to a fighter like an X-wing with heavy mass and the equipment to use that to their advantage is an extremely dangerous decision. Why? Well you must understand exactly how sharp the TIE Interceptors movements’ are- you will travel in straight lines... We mean straight. You do not slide unless you really through yourself into a tight turn. What's this mean in close combat though? Say you’re pursuing an X-wing at close range like you've been taught. You're about to fire when you realize he's spun slightly so that his wings are no longer parallel to the ground but slightly more vertical, one wing lower than the other. What do you think will happen? The X-wing begins to 'slide' to right and down. This is one of a few vectors that a TIE Interceptor can not follow. Why? If the TIE Interceptor turns to follow it, it will either have to slow to a near stall speed which would leave it as bait to any passing enemy fighters, or it would have to try and make a run on the fighter, forcing it to overshoot the enemy and leave him as an open target to that same enemy. So what should you do? This is why the two fighter element is so important- if you're on your own, you must pull out. However, if you have two people, you're already spread out, so if the X-wing were to slow down, the second TIE Interceptor could take it out as you pulled out. So- in atmosphere against high thrust craft like X-wings and Y-wings: watch yourself.

Another interesting ability is that is can operate at extremely low levels. This is partially due to their excellent maneuverability, but also, when needed, because of repulsor lifts fitted to the bottoms of the fighter. These repulsor lifts allow them to stop descending when reaching a certain level because of the controlled fields they project, thus creating a kind of bounce when first reaching the indicated level. These are mostly used in attacking ground targets or emergency landings so that no real damage is done to the pilot or fighter.

Lore

When people see TIE Interceptors, they are one of two things. Delighted because the allies have arrived, or terrified because one of the most powerful forces in the galaxy has begun its insurgency. When writing about these timeless craft, you need to include details about how they look, feel and act for both yourself and the people outside. One famous characteristic of a TIE is the fact that they 'whine' through the air to announce their presence. Also, they are incredibly quick and like to move around quite a bit. So when an X-wing take's a post shot and the Interceptor easily moves out of the way and comes back for a shot of it's own, that looks pretty remarkable from the ground. So- use the TIE Interceptor's presence if you can: it is truly a piece of art.

TIE Aggressor

    *Cargo: 150 kg
*Quick Description: Heavy Fighter/Bomber, multi-role craft used to disrupt NR shipping operations

The TIE Aggressor is a heavy fighter-bomber multi-role craft that was developed prior to the destruction of the first Death Star and as a direct response to a perceived growth in the amount of heavy shipping aligned with the Rebel Alliance. Its most obvious design feature is an anti-fighter defensive turret mounted on the aft dorsal surface of the fuselage, and a heavier than normal forward-firing laser cannon battery. The TIE Aggressor is neither fighter nor bomber, but rather something in between. It's a favorite with the more free-spirited pilots of the Imperial fighter cadre who enjoy longer missions away from base where they can be apart from the larger formations normally associated with an Imperial raid on Rebellion re- supply shipping.

TIE Hunter

The TIE Hunter sports a wing configuration that is similar to TIE Interceptor's, but without the center square piece. Its wings have S-foil servos allowing them to open when in attack mode and close for improved acceleration. The fighter is armed with two ion cannons, two laser cannons and two proton torpedo launchers. Unusually, it also has shields and a hyperdrive; it carries a crew of one.

Hunters were designed exclusively for the Imperial Storm Commandos to combat the X-wing. The fighter copied the X-wing's main feature (the wing configuration) while keeping the distinctive TIE fighter look. The Empire refused to use the ships in large quantities because they were based on a craft of the Rebellion.

TIE Hunters tend to accelerate faster than the X-Wing, but sacrifice the inherent maneuverability of the classic TIE fighter, TIE interceptor, etc.

V-38 TIE Phantom

In the Star Wars Expanded Universe, the V-38 TIE Phantom was a prototype TIE, produced by Admiral Sarn, equipped with a dangerous technology unseen in decades: a Stygian cloaking device. This cloaking technology was first used on the Sith Infiltrator used by Darth Maul during his search for Queen Padmé Amidala. The cloaking device utilized stygium crystals and could be used to attack other ships unseen until the moment of firing, thus getting the jump on their enemy. It was armed with three laser cannons mounted on its three wings, and two body mounted laser cannons. It required two pilots for operation.

What also made this craft unusual (in addition to cloaking technology) was the apparent addition of Life Support Systems, as Rookie One and Ru Murleen pilot one wearing standard stormtrooper armor (minus helmets), rather than the customary flight suit and helmet seen on all other TIE Fighter pilots.

TIE Raptor

Like all TIE craft, it has a spherical cockpit with an octagonal window, but rather than the usual large wings on either side, it has four short fins protruding from it. Each TIE Raptor was armed with four wing mounted laser cannons, and a pair of concussion missile tubes mounted just below the cockpit. This fighter was involved in the final battle between Han Solo's Mon Remonda and Warlord Zsinj's Iron Fist. To draw off Wedge Antilles with his Rogue and Wraith Squadron's, Zsinj sent a fake 181st Fighter Squadron to the world of Selaggis Six in the hope that this would allow Zsinj enough time to fake the destruction of his Super Star Destroyer Iron Fist. Having engaged this fake 181st, the Rogues and Wraiths were attacked by a squadron of new TIE Raptors but ultimately this design fared no better than any other. This is the only known use of the TIE Raptor. Despite the striking similarity between the TIE Raptor and the basic TIE Fighter, Sienar Fleet Systems was not responsible for its design or manufacture.

*Quick Description: Dedicated heavy assault bomber model. Replaced TIE/gt series.

The TIE bomber is a larger, less maneuverable version of the TIE Fighter used for destroying larger enemy ships and pinpointing planetary bombardment. The TIE bomber has two joined hulls; one with the pilot and the other carrying what is called a "universal" warhead launcher. It has a unique ability to launch a variety of weapons like large numbers of torpedoes, bombs, orbital mines or thermal detonators- this makes it easy, and enjoyable to tailor for a mission. Also, since it is slow and not very maneuverable it must be protected by other fighters. The lack of agility and overall finesse at times has drawn up the name 'Dupe' by Rebel Fighters. The name is based on the idea that they were slower, and somehow "dumber", than the regular TIE fighter. However- for what they lose in lack of air gymnastics, they make up for in stamina and sheer firepower.

*Quick Description: Introduced by Grand Admiral Thrawn as assault and ground support craft.

The Scimitar assault bomber was a replacement to the "slow and bulky" TIE bomber. During Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign to retake the Galaxy Core from Ysanne Isard and the New Republic, the Scimitar Assault Bombers were developed as a new generation of TIE Bombers. The Scimitar Assault Bomber has a single, elongated body that holds two; the pilot and gunner sit in a forward module which can separate in an ejection style from the craft and serve as an escape pod. The Scimitar Assault Bomber is supported by two larger array wings on either side; interlocked repulsor-lift thrusters provide it with additional maneuverability. In space, the Scimitar Assault Bomber is faster than any TIE Bomber and in planetary atmospheres it can travel at 1,150 km per hour and its dive-bomb speed is 1,250 km per hour. It is 13.8 meters long and thus is longer than the standard TIE Fighter.

Defender History

Unlike most standard TIE craft, the TIE Defender has both a deflector shield and hyperdrive. It carries a formidable array of weaponry, with four wingtip laser cannons, two wingtip Ion Cannons, and an two adaptable Proton Torpedo/Concussion Missile launchers, each capable of holding eight missiles. Some modified Defenders could also sport a small tractor beam, used primarily to snare more agile, enemy starfighters. Its triple wing design and powerful engines make the craft faster and more maneuverable than any other starfighter in Imperial service, even breaking the mark set by the preceding TIE Avenger. The triple wing formation is also responsible for the NR slang term 'Trips,' used in combat to identify the Defenders. While the craft is very glamorous, it is also very expensive, costing roughly 300,000 credits for a single unit, which is five times the cost of a standard TIE fighter. Even an organization as wealthy as the Imperial Starfleet could not hope to mass-deploy such a fighter (or even the almost as capable TIE Avenger) so only elite pilots flew them, and then only for missions of the utmost importance.
