Protector-class Escort Carrier
The Protector-class Escort Carrier is a capital ship class used by the Galactic Empire. While most variants of the Vindicator-class Heavy Cruiser were created to either operate independently, the Protector-class was created to support Star Destroyer operations.

Background[edit]
The Protector-class escort carrier was designed as a starfighter carrier to support Imperial fleets, particularly those containing Star Destroyers.
The design, unfortunately, initially failed because some admirals thought the concept of calling on a specialized ship to defend an Imperial Star Destroyer was insulting. Many Protectors were been sold to the Corporate Sector Authority, or are in the employ of Imperial Customs. Despite the Protector's weaponry and speed, it still lost to the Lancer Frigate in the trials for the Fleet Anti-Starfighter Platform competition. As the Rebellion learned to counter the Lancer platform, it has since come back into use in many fleets.
Characteristics[edit]
The Protector-class is a faster and more heavily armed flanking and escort ship than other vessels in its class. It is configured as a starfighter carrier and command and control platform. Heavy weaponry is traded for multiple large internal hangar bays that can carry a full wing of starfighters, with the ability to control and track that many and more allied fighter craft. Protectors often serve as the command ship and escort for a larger vessel, often a Star Destroyer. They concentrate on defending the formation from attack, allowing the attack craft to focus on the primary mission.
