The Eastern Territories[edit]

Also know as 'The Typhus Sector' or 'The Eastern Frontier', the Eastern Territories is a collection of systems along the Vast Empire's upper eastern border. They form a key part of the Empire's home territories, and act as a barrier for the central systems from invasion from that area of space.

This sector, whilst tradtionally peaceful, has been in turmoil recently due to a number of conflicts.

Systems[edit]

  • Bannth System - A system primarily used for mining and resources, this system is sparsely populated, and is home to mainly mining and refinery installations. The main plant in the system was destroyed during Operation: Firestorm.
  • Yetton System - An unpopulated system, it is home only to Outpost Viverro, a listening post that is mean't to act as an early warning system should the fortress system of Ios fall.
  • Ios System - A Fortress sytstem, Ios is the gateway to Vast Empire space & the Eastern Territories. It is heavily fortified, and home only to military installations. The defences of this system were severly weakened during Operation: Typhus
  • Epsilon System - One of only two domestic systems in this area, Epsilon is home to several medium-level agricultural and industrial facilities. Despite escaping the Drakan Crisis and the war relatively unscathed, it neverthe less became a battleground during the Epsilon Uprising.
  • Typhus System - The capital system for the sector, the Typhus system is the central hub for the region. It has the the area's only largest starport, has a large industrial base and even some minor shipywards for sub-capital ship construction.

Recent History[edit]

The Drakan Crisis (9 ABY)[edit]

The Drakan Crisis brought the Vast Empire closer to defeat then at any point during it's history. Drakan, an imperial warlord, who had fled to the unknown regions after the battle of Endor, had settled in an area of space close to the eventual border of the Vast Empire. In 9 ABY, he was looking to expand his territory, and so launched a full scale invasion of the Eastern Territories. A strike at the Bannth Mining Facilities threatened to severly cripple trade and industrial resources in the area, and a sneak attack of the Yetton and Ios systems almost crippled the Sector's military strength.

However, Navy High Command was warned of the attack by Outpost Viverro, and was quick to launch a counter attack. The elite squadrons of Phoenix Wing, as well as elements of the Defensive Fleet were scrambled to the sector in order to combat the Warlord's advance. Nazgul Squadron, despite a valiant attempt, couldn't save the mining facilities, however they did manage to route the enemy forces in the area. Kaph Squadron was scrambled to Yetton, and managed to retake the system despite heavy losses. A sizable task force, which included Viper Squadron, was sent to Ios using an alternative route with the intent of catching the enemy off gaurd by using the same entry route they did.

However, it quickly became apparant that the enemy had in fact come from the direction of the Yetton system, and so the sneak attack was nullified. Another vicious and bloody battle ensued. Both sides suffered severe losses, however all looked lost when two additional Imperial II-class Star Destroyers appeared in the system, belonging to the Imperial Dominion (although that was not known at the time). Even with the recent reinforcements from Yetton, the survivors were no match for two fresh battleships.

However, the Dominion forces left, along with what was left of the enemy flotilla. Whilst this effectively put an end to the Drakan Crisis, this was but a mere prelude for a series of events that would threaten to consume the entire sector in the fires of war...

The Epsilon Uprising[edit]

During this time, a conglomarate of trading corporations, many with criminal and shady background, banded together to form the Empyrean League. The League, which was looking to announce to the galaxy that it mean't business, managed to turn and corrupt Kiff Binks, acting CEO of the Bacredi Shipping Corporation. Acting together, they managed to manipulate the general feeling of ill-will towards the Vast Empire, and using their own resrouces managed to stage an uprising on the principle planet.

Due to the recent crisis, the in-system military were unable to beat-back the Uprising. However, the timely arrival of the defensive fleet, as well as the exposure of Bink's betrayl and the league by Zhar Bacredi, The Uprising was quickly quelled. However, resentment towards the Vast Empire would remain for at least the next year...

The Dominion War[edit]

It eventually came to light that Drakan, the warlord behind the recent troubles in the Imperial Dominion, another Imperial Splinter factor that hard carvd out an area for itself just east of the Vast Empire, along the underbelly of the Unknown Regions. Whilst not officially involved in the Drakan Crisis, the Dominion never-the-less saw an opportunity to expand it's territory, and cripple a rival. However, by this point, the majority of the defensive fleet had been redeployed to shore up the defences in the area.

As such, the 'Dominion War' really only lasted a few months as the VE & Dominion Navies fought skrimishes all along the frontier, with neither side gaining ground. Even so, with resources strethced thin due to past events, the VE couldn't afford to squander resrouces, or public good-will on another protracted war.

Operation: Peacebringer was an attempt to broker a truce with the Imperial Dominion, however they saw this as a power-play to try and once again cripple the Empire. The two side met in the neutral system of Roku Tan, halfway between the two Empire's. It soon became clear however the Dominion planned to betray the Vast Empire, and so the Battle of Roku Tan was fought.

In display of tactical brilliance not seen since the early years, Admiral Japheth lead the the VE Navy to Victory, with relatively low losses. The ensueing Treaty of Roku Tan forced the Imperial Dominion into a cease fire, and they were forced to give up most of their Navy.

Current Situation[edit]

With the Dominion forced into a (reluctant) peace agreement, the Eastern Territories is once again at peace. However, times are tough. The majority of the sector's resources are being put towards rebuilding the military installatiosn at Yetton & Ios, as well as mining facilities in Bannth. Resources are tight, taxes are high, and morale is low.

Tremors of discontent are being felt throught out the sector, especially in Epsilon where they haven't forgotten the recent Uprising. High Command are going to have to think of ways of keeping the population in line if stability in the sector is to be maintained...

Behind the Scenes[edit]

This area of space first appeared in a Navy Wing story in 2008, although it wasn't called the 'Eastern Territories' at the time. During this period, there were three squadrons active, and each squadron had their own mission to complete. Viper Squadron's part introduced Ios, Nazgul introduced Bannth, and Kaph introduced Yetton. Typhus was also mentioned in passing during Viper's section - Operation: Typhus, and has cropped up in several stories since. The Epsilon system first appeared in a Viper Squadron story shortly afterwards, titled Uprising.

It wasn't until this time however that Ibram Tyrol, in an effort to add a little more continuity to his squadron's missions, decided to unite Epsilon, Typhus, and the three systems from the Wing story into one sector. The placement of the sector along the Eastern border was part arbitrary, and part the result of a seperate project Tyrol was working on to generate a Map for the Vast Empire, but one that included every planet mentioned over the past couple of years. The picture that accompanys this article is from the same map, but is not to be considered strictly canon at the moment.

The Imperial Dominion and Drakan also weren't linked to begin with. Again, in an effort to add a little bit of continuity into the Navy, The Imperial Dominion were blamed as the sponsors of the 'Drakan' crises, and were used as the main opponent in the Navy Holiday Competition - Betrayal at Roku Tan.
