Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Meagher, commonly referred to as Gunny, is the squad leader of Oppressor Squad.

History

Thomas Meagher, jr. was born to Thomas Meagher, sr. and Francine Meagher, who were both owners of the Meagher Plantation on Dantooine. Meaghers upbringing was quiet and humble, but his parents weren't too well off and their style of life fluctuated from year to year as the prices of their crops rose and fell. When Thomas was eight he was shipped to the Dantooine academy for eight months out of the year, going back to visit his parents during the four months off and other weeks in between for holidays. Meagher learned that you have to be independent to learn at that school and he studied Military History while at the academy. He was at the Dantooine academy until he was ten, when he finally moved back to the farm as his father failed to pay tuition. From the brief things he learned about Military History he bragged about to his father, who was shameful of how he couldn't let his young boy learn so much more about what made him happy. Meagher was worked to the bone by his parents for a year as a farmhand, as they had to fire almost all of the help.

The prices of the crops fluctuated higher and Meagher was finally sent back to the academy, but now he was fourteen years of age and he was sent to a more remote academy, on one of Dantooine's seas. Here Meagher learned how to literally "tough it out" in -15 degrees Fahrenheit average weather. This was basically a military survival school, as his father saw no other job opportunities off the farm for him and that academy was basically free and sponsored by the Imperial Military on Tadath. Since the military on Tadath had other intentions than actually teaching the kids things about real life situations, they supplied the academy with rifles and speeders. There were common hunting trips all across the planet. He learned how to handle a hunting rifle by age sixteen with extreme accuracy, and as soon as the Vast Empire took full effect and splintered from the Empire he was "drafted" by his father into the military. His father literally signed the form and he didn't even know about it and was shipped out the next day.

Vast Imperial Military Training

Meagher's sixth-month training regimen was an the endless grind of breakneck physical and mental conditioning preparing him for Vast Empire military service. After a relentless day of physical training and environmental conditioning in Tadath’s many planetary climates, consisting of multiple fitness runs every day, winter training in Tadath's southern ice fields, during the training he went on three two-week long expeditions of survival training in the planet's deserts, and a they also performed a live fire paintball drill in the Tadathian forest, Meagher would get no more than five hours of sleep before having to wake up and do it all over again. After a few months of this routine, Meagher had lost fifteen pounds, but was considerably stronger.

The Military

Meagher was placed in Sunoo Squad as a Private, and was commissioned with a standard rifle. Sunoo Squad was under Strongback Platoon, which was notable for its full frontal assaults and the massive losses of life caused during their campaigns. Meagher's squad leader was Platoon Sergeant Sullivan, and his assistant squad leader was Senior Sergeant al-Jason. Meagher's original training during his time at Sunoo Squad was as a vehicle crewmen, and he helped fly the platoon's transport. Meagher was part of the deadly campaign on Adumar, where the Vast Imperial Army lost three whole platoons on impact and another two during the first thirty minutes of battle. After the Vast Empire won control on Adumar, Meagher was part of the Adumar Occupational Force, consisting of a single regiment and commanded by High General Harper, who later became Vast Empire Intelligence Chief. During the pursuing months of the occupation—the army was there for nine months—there were three terrorist strikes on two of the cities that they were in, causing loss of life in the hundreds of thousands. The rebellion of the Adumar's civilians made the Vast Empire resort to hostile means and by the end of the third month there was a loss of civilian life by Vast Empire forces in the hundreds of thousands.

The Vast Empire landed fifty transports on the ground to take out the remaining 50,000 Vast Empire troops, and they were supported by three Vast Empire Navy frigates: Bastion, Serenity, and Lobo. Meagher and Sunoo Squad helped secure the remote cities around the landing area and suffered a loss of life of half their squad. Meagher had to take the ASL position for the time being as Gunnery Sergeant (by that time he had been promoted) al-Jason had been killed in action. The rest of Sunoo Squad was able to safely make it out of the planet, as thirty-four transports out of fifty were shot down or suffered damage, and the Bastion suffered damage and was only repaired in time for Operation: Iron Sweep. Sunoo Squad was replaced by Raidering Squad soon after in Strongback Platoon and it was converged with Jackson Ace Platoon, causing Sunoo to be closed down forever and Sergeant Major Sullivan was retired by that time. Meagher, who had exemplified his position in the Stormtrooper Corps by taking five kills during the first ten days of the Adumar campaign was given the position of Assistant Squad Leader in Raidering Squad.

The remains of Susoo Squad were transfered into the new Raidering Squad, still under Strongback Platoon. He was given the position of Assistant Squad Leader under Gunnery Sergeant Cammery. They started out by going to the planet of Amulens, where they put down a small rebellion and instituted marshal control. Raidering Squad soon ended and he was placed as the Squad Leader of Oppressor Squad, and given a promotion to Gunnery Sergeant.

Meagher was given the post of the new squad: Oppressor Squad, this time it was under a brand new platoon. Everything was pretty much new to the entire platoon and the squad. He supplied the squad with new weapons per his connections in the army and a brand new type of leadership for the squad. Oppressor Squad's leadership had never lasted long before (when it was in a previous platoon) and barely more than a month was the average amount of time for a squad leader. They then began to attack Arkania, and moved towards Kanti with Wraith Squad and Crater Squad. They began to meet resistance around the hills of Arkanti. They were part of Dorn task force.
