Ensign

The rank of Ensign is bestowed upon any member who successfully completes the Field Officer Candidate Exam. Members holding this rank or higher have earned their commissions as officers in the Vast Empire's Navy.
Officially, even members holding this rank are not yet qualified to lead starfighter squadrons, but due to the realities of wartime, some Ensigns (or even non-commissioned officers) do lead squadrons. Ensigns may also hold a staff position under a superior officer. Ensign is the lowest of the commissioned officer ranks.

Any member holding the rank of Ensign ranks directly above an Officer Candidate and directly below a Lieutenant Junior Grade.
