Overview[edit]

Welcome to the go-to place for information on the bane of all members- pilots and ship captains, young and old. The name of this foul creature? The weekly report.

This page is intended to give you the basic information you need to know so that you can report in on time, to the right people, and with relevant information. Why, you ask? In all seriousness, reports make the Navy go ‘round. Without them unit commanders may not have the information they need to lead effectively and high command officers may not get crucial information they need to keep the Navy running. So buckle down, my friend, and don’t sweat it. Reports are quick and easy to do once you understand them, and they're essential to running the Navy. Getting a good report to your commanding officers can help them plan for the future, lead in the current, and reward for the past. Reports, and the decisions that get made because of them, can have a huge positive impact on your experience in the VE.

There are several sections below with relevant information. Simply click the "Contents" box links at the top of the page to go straight to the one you need.

Who To Report To[edit]

Just in case you’ve ever wondered, here’s all the information you should ever need to figure out who to send your report to. Some of these lists can seem long, so if you get confused make sure you ask a VENA Trainer or other leader. Also, remember that sometimes one person will be more than one thing to you. If you’re in Alpha Flight, for example, your Flight Leader is also your Squadron Commander. You don’t need to send it to them twice.

If you are a:

  • Flight Member/Crewmember (FM/CM)
    • Report to your Flight Leader, your Executive Officer, and your Squadron Commander. Crewmembers, report to your Ship's Executive Officer as well as Commanding Officer.

  • Flight Leader: (FL)
    • Report to your your Squadron Commander.

  • Squadron Executive Officer/Ship Executive Officer (SXO)
    • Report to your Squadron Commander or Ship Captain.

  • Squadron Commander (SC)
    • Report to your Ship Captain and Wing Commander.

  • Wing Commander (WC)
    • Report to your Task Force Commander and the Wing Reports topic.

  • Ship Captain (SCAP)
    • Report to your Taskforce Commande and the Fleet Reports topic.

  • Taskforce Commander (TFC)
    • Report to your Fleet Commander and to the Naval High Command in the Fleet Reports topic.

  • Fleet Commander (FC)
    • Report to the Fleet Reports topic.

How to Report[edit]

Basics[edit]

Reports are sent in through the Private Message (PM) system on the ComNet. In order to get ready to write your report, follow these steps:

  1. Click on “Message Center” at the top of the ComNet page. It is the second of the three links.
  2. Click on “Compose Message” on the right hand side of the page that comes up. It is the third of three links just above any messages you have received.
  3. Type in the name of each person you report to in the box labeled “To:” while adding a comma and a space right after the end of each person’s name (except for the last one) in order to separate them.
    • Example: Amacuse, Slasher, Drac
  4. Use one of the formats below to fill in the “Subject:” box and the “Message:” box, where you will put the report itself.

If you have questions, contact a VENA Trainer.

Reporting Templates[edit]

Use the template that applies to you as a framework for creating your report. Feel free to add other elements if you want/need to, but make sure the information listed gets supplied. Each template also includes a template for posting to the Squadron Reports or Fleet Reports topics, if those reports are applicable.

When to Report[edit]

Reports are due once every week, and the deadline is different depending on your position within the Navy. This is due to officers needing to collect reports from their men before reporting to their superiors. Therefore, the further down the chain of command you are, the earlier your report is due. Generally, the earlier you report in the better.

Type of report and time due:

  • Flight Member Reports by 11:59 A.M. server time on Thursday morning.
  • Flight Reports by 11:59 P.M. server time on Thursday evening.
  • Squadron Reports by 11:59 P.M. server time on Friday evening.
  • Ship Captain Reports by 11:59 P.M. server time on Friday evening.
  • Taskforce Commander Reports by 11:59 A.M. server time on Saturday morning.
  • Fleet Commander Reports by 11:59 P.M. server time on Saturday evening.

Note: For reference, server time is that of the Central time zone, which is GMT -6 hours.

Every so often there may be special reports required of you. Most often this takes the form of special input that the NHC might request from a unit commander. Occasionally, though, when reporting and/or activity have gotten low, the NHC may declare an AWOL Check (AWOL = Absent Without Leave). During these instances there will be specific actions required of you as a member in order to prove your activity- but don’t worry, even those typically aren’t too extensive.

Is Reporting Mandatory?[edit]

In a word, yes. As noted above, lack of reports from a large number of members may trigger an AWOL Check. However, penalties for not reporting may also be assessed on an individual basis. These penalties get larger as you go longer without reporting, and can include monetary fines that’ll take a chunk out of your account over at the First Galactic Bank, but can also expand to rank and position demotions. Being found AWOL, whether individually or by failing to respond to an AWOL Check, will result in your character being removed from Active Duty and placed into the AWOL roster, which ends all salary payments to the character’s FGB account.

I Have Questions About Reporting[edit]

If you have questions about reporting, whether it’s when, how, or to whom you should report, or any other question, all you have to do is contact the Naval Training Officer (NTO), a member of the Academy Staff, or an officer or other veteran member. Most anyone should be happy to assist you.

Miscellaneous[edit]

You don't need to bother with this section unless you're just curious about some of the history of the Navy. The following link is to the old Reports page written by Arturus in 2006, which this page replaced in May 2011: Original Navy Reporting Page Archive.
