THIS PAGE SHOWS THE OLD, DISCONTINUED SYSTEM OF NAVAL RANKS. THE CURRENT SYSTEM CAN BE FOUND ON THE PAGE: Naval Ranks

Competence, initiative, leadership, and patience will lead to promotion; failure, laziness, selfishness, and whining will not.

Note[edit]

In the Vast Empire's Navy, the chain of command is based upon the positions held by individual members, not by those members' nominal ranks. In situations where a lower-ranked member is in a position of greater authority, the position takes precedence (For example, a Flight Leader who is a Senior Crewman is higher up the chain of command than a Flight Member who is a Petty Officer First Class, despite being nominally "lower ranked." The Petty Officer, in this example, cannot give orders to the Senior Crewman; in fact, the PO1 must obey the SCRW's orders.).

The rank system is a secondary way of distinguishing between members, and promotions are one of the primary ways of honoring contributions to the Division and the club (the other main honor being medals and awards).

Promotion of Navy members above the rank of Commodore is only possible by direct order of the Naval Commander in Chief and Chief of Naval Operations, at their sole discretion. The ranks of Vice Captain and below may be conferred by individual Command Officers, Ship Captains, Wing Commanders, or Squadron Commanders, as appropriate, but the Naval Commander in Chief, Chief of Naval Operations, and Chief of Naval Warfare must be advised of such promotions and must formally approve them, before they go into effect, so that the Roster can be properly amended and revised.

Styles of verbal address[edit]

Naval officers ranking as Rear Admiral or higher are addressed as "Admiral." Ensigns, as well as Junior Grade and full Lieutenants, are all addressed as "Lieutenant." Lieutenant Commanders may be addressed informally as "Commander." Warrant Officers, Petty Officers, and Crewmen are addressed as "Mr." or "Ms." or an equivalent in ceremonial conferences. Other naval officers and personnel are addressed simply by their literal rank. Special Thanks goes out to to Tomas for the creation of insignias Ensign to Grand Admiral, and Casca for the creation of patches Leading Crewman to Chief Warrant Officer.
